After months of speculation, the ex Emu Bay Railway shunter PVH no. 21 has found a new home, having being purchased by the Derwent Valley Railway who will use it on their trains on the Derwent Valley Line.

Sunday 29th July was a big day for this locomotive. Shown here parked at the workshop that had been its home for over 40 years, PVH No.21 is about to embark on its longest run ever, and all on lines that it had not travelled before.

The PVH was purchased by the EBR in 1953 to replace the companys Beyer Garrats on ore hauling duties on the west coast. The powerful Paxman engine was very capable on the job but its rigid 0-8-0 wheel arrangement meant that it was hard on the track. In time the engine was relegated to shunting duties, but not before it proved to management that diesel that diesel hydraulic traction was the way to go.

From the EBR archives, this pic shows the PVH climbing out of Ridgley with a typical load, back in the days when it worked on the mainline.

PVH in 1969

From John Robertson, this old pic shows the PVH without the end platforms and with completely different exhaust stacks to those now fitted.
