Lake Eyre is
Australia’s largest Saltpan, a breeding ground for thousands of
pelicans when in flood, and an impressive sight dry or wet. But it is
only a small part of what you will see during this three day, two
overnight tour.
The
tour leaves from Charleville and overflies the Bulloo River, Cooper
Creek and the Channel Country, Lake Yamma Yamma to Birdsville on the
edge of the Simpson Desert. There, John Menzies will take you on a
guided tour of his Outback Working Museum and Lyn, Don or Jim will take
you on a half day 4WD tour on the edge of the Simpson Desert.
You can climb Big Red,
the first big Sand Dune on the edge of the desert, visit the Waddi Trees
and the Dingo Caves and enjoy billy tea and damper whilst Jim shows off
his whip-cracking skills.
The
evening meal will be in the dining room of the historic Birdsville Pub.
Next morning we depart
for a flight over Coongie Lakes, a huge natural wetland area fed by the
Cooper Creek, enroute to Lake Eyre. We overfly Lake Eyre North, landing
at William Creek for an early lunch. From there we track via Lake Eyre
South to over fly the “Marree Man”, the 3km long outline of a man
ploughed into the soil and rock near Finnis Springs, then via the Cooper
Creek to Innamincka.
At Innamincka we
cruise the Cooper and enjoy the spectacle of the abundant birdlife on
the Creek. The evening meal and accommodation is at the Innamincka
Hotel. Next morning, after breakfast and a
tour of the restored Inland Mission building, we depart for a short hop
to the Dig Tree. Here we view the evidence of the harsh and unexpected
conditions faced by the early explorers at the site where Burke and
Wills perished.
Our return to Charleville
takes us via the Cooper Creek, Bulloo River and the Mulga Lands of south
west Queensland.
