Alcohol and teenage drinking don't mix

You would think that governments would ban something that contributed to half our road accidents. If it also contributed to millions of family breakdowns, damaged people's health, and stopped them from thinking clearly, you would think that this substance would be public enemy number 1.

But for some strange reason, governments rarely ban alcohol, even though it contributes to so much misery and crime.

People who are normally sensible can become embarrassing idiots when they drink alcohol. They may commit crimes because of alcohol, drive recklessly, think they are funny when they are not, or become violent and argumentative after a few drinks. If you are sober, you don't want to be around them when they are drinking.

Teen drinkers are looking for problems

Teens who drink alcohol are often setting themselves up for a lifetime of trouble. Drunk teens can easily become drunk adults who continue to have all the problems that alcohol causes. Alcohol drains minds and money. It saps sensibility and sure-thinking.

Christians should avoid alcohol

There are no reasons for Christians to drink alcohol, and there are many reasons against it. The problems that alcohol brings range from sad to wretched:

crime

violence

family breakdowns

bringing shame on Christianity

causing harm to innocent people

allowing yourself to lose control of your mind

giving yourself serious health problems such as liver damage and shrinkage of the brain.

What does the Bible say?

The Bible has much to say against drunkenness. Jesus Christ often spoke against it (for example, Luke 12:45; 21:34), as did the Apostle Paul (Ephesians 5:18; 1 Corinthians 11:21, for example). The Bible especially warns those who have leadership roles in the Christian community to avoid getting drunk (1 Timothy 3:8; Titus 2:3).

It is therefore unfitting for Christians to tolerate drunkenness, and any who do so show disregard for the teachings of Christ, the Bible, and other humans.

Reason to avoid alcohol

There is such danger with alcohol that even Christians who are strong enough to avoid drunkenness should avoid alcohol so it will not encourage weaker Christians to take it up. The Apostle Paul in fact says this in Romans 14:21.

For thoughtful Christian teens, the wisest and safest thing to do with alcohol is to avoid it.
