About Masters Squash & QMSA As Masters sport has become popular in the last 35 years, so Masters squash has grown. After starting as Veterans or Mature Age squash, QMSA was formed in 1979, affiliating with the other State & Territory Associations & the Australian Masters Squash Association to organize & formalize their tournament calenders. The Masters' organisations try to ensure that the tournaments are run to a high standard & that social events are organized with the tournaments so that an enjoyable weekend can be had at any tournament. Each State or Territory has its own tournament calender & the AMSA hold national titles each year in a different State/Territory on a rotational basis. You'll find contacts for the various associations at the bottom of this page.
Masters squash has a minimum age of 35 years & championship events are held in 5-year age bands eg 35-39, 40-44 etc. Separate divisions in each age group are organized to cater for players of all standards, so don't be afraid to try Masters squash just because you're not a champion. There's only a few of them but the rest of us have just as much fun, if not more. Other tournaments have different formats eg Team events, Timed-game tournaments, & tournaments graded on ability(rating) irrespective of age or gender. QMSA hold a tournament approximately once a month & we try to mix the tournament types. A get-together is organized for the Saturday night of these tournaments, usually at a licensed club or hotel, where we can all have a meal & do a bit of socializing, dancing, play pokies etc. You'll find the atmosphere at these tournaments very friendly, with most players spending their spare time at the courts catching up with old friends & making new ones. The matches are played hard & fairly without the "aggro" of our younger years.
The QMSA State Titles are usually held on or near the Queen's Birthday weekend each year. Players from all over Queensland & interstate travel for this tournament. The Titles are held at a different centre each year & players must be members of QMSA or an affiliated body to enter. All other QMSA tournaments are opened to anybody over 35.
The AMSA National Titles are held over a two-week period some time between August & October, depending on climate, local holiday periods etc. The individual titles are held during the first week, with an Interstate Teams event the second week. Again, all standards are catered for. Several social events are organized for this fortnight & your spare time can be spent as hectically or quietly as you wish. A great social atmosphere preavails at the courts for the whole fortnight. QMSA usually have a contingent of 50-100 players travelling to the National Titles so you never arrive there without knowing somebody.
If all this has piqued your interest, come & join us at a tournament & see for yourself. Great Squash & Friendly People.
