Breed Recognition With an increase in mechanisation, the market for Waler horses declined, however the horses continued to breed and prosper on many stations in northern Australia, and many of these stations continue to maintain concise records. Interest in the Waler was revived in the 1960's, when a group of enthusiasts decided to launch a society to recognise our magnificent home-bred horses. The Australian Stock Horse Society was formed in 1971, finally giving the great Australian Waler the recognition he deserved. Thirty years later, the Waler horse, under the auspice of The Australian Stock Horse Society, opened the Sydney Olympic Games, to the theme from "The Man from Snowy River", and before an audience of over three billion people.
WALERS IN THEIR OWN RIGHT In 1986 a group of dedicated Waler admirers determined to maintain the heritage of the legendary Waler horse, and formed the Waler Horse Society. It is a society which aims to preserve and establish the Waler as a breed with its own identity, conforming to traditional breeding standards.
"They looked light and wiry alongside the English horses but the authorities pronounce them the finest horses yet landed"
STRENGTH....VERSATILITY....TEMPERAMENT.... A WALER WILL NEVER LET YOU DOWN
