IMAGES - Long range Match, out to 1200 metres is the premier target sport. Perfect barrels and exemplary sighting equipment are a must. Powerful cartridges perform well but wear out barrels and also cause shooter fatigue. This heavy has been chambered to 6.5X55 Swedish. PRODUCTS - THEIR DEVELOPMENT, THE RATIONALE, AND BASED UPON OUR EXPERIENCE.

Occasionally the need arises to develop new products or to mould some concept into useful hardware. Market forces, user requirements, advances in technology and technique - often someone’s spur of the moment inspiration - can create the motivation for a project. The difficulty, of course, is avoiding what we call “The ‘Cosy’ Scenario”.

Definition - ‘Cosy’ - Soft, Warm. Safe, Secure, Insulated from external influence, Australian vernacular.
Definition - ‘Scenario’ - Something someone dreamed up to (hopefully) meet the scene.
‘Cosy Scenarios’ - seem to develop most often from bright ideas desperately seeking useful application.

So, for example, no-one would be silly enough to promote the fitting of a downwards firing, short range, gunpod under the wing of a very expensive modern combat aircraft. OR WOULD THEY?

YEP! No problem. Take multi millions worth of sophisticated modern jet aircraft - deny it of all the usual advantages of height, speed, and manoeuvreability - strip it of half a century’s development’s worth of stand off weapons systems. Attach these other gadgets instead - then have it fly the ground attack role - low, slow, and dirty over a hot combat situation. Every fighter jock’s dream.

Cosy Scenarios - how to avoid them - us, and you, the customer.

Our task is to interact with the customer to establish his exact requirement. Sometimes difficult, sometimes a breeze - the process nonetheless has to be achieved. We make rifles for both military and civilian applications and receive quite a number of enquiries for supply of match, custom, and recreational firearms.

Defining the user requirement for target sports is comparatively easy. In most cases the competition rules dictate weights, dimensions, sight types, and usually exactly what accessories may be attached to the competition firearm. Other disciplines, varminting and hunting may provide scope for different layouts and accessories mixes.

It is all too easy for the customer to become overeager about his new purchase. The shopping guidelines may become somewhat ill defined in these circumstances (that ‘defining user requirement’ I mentioned) so that, for instance, the customer who originally wanted a hunting rifle to stalk goats in mountainous territory - well, this hunter finally decided he needed a 30x57 Ackley improved rifle with a bull barrel and 12 round magazine because he missed a long shot last hunt. He also wanted one and a half kilos of 8-32x56 Nightforce scope on the rifle so he could see what he was aiming at.
We make him the rifle exactly as he wanted - then on delivery day he complains that the rifle combination is far too heavy at seven kilograms. This is the cosy scenario at work. Customers often forget that sights and mounts possess mass, that bull barrels ARE heavier than hunting profiles, and especially, that receivers have to be comparatively massive to support bull barrels.

When it comes to the civilian market we are quite able to manufacture traditional rifles with hand crafted timber stocks and traditional action bedding methods. These rifles, though accurate and reliable, can never meet the same standard of accuracy as do our modern designs. And, yes, we do make these for customers who enjoy them for their beauty.

In general terms the specification and build standard for each discipline of target competition is defined by the individual rules of each discipline. Most serious accuracy disciplines have rules permitting the latest techniques in fabrication. Most disciplines have recently come to accept some adjustment to their scoring procedures to allow for consistently finer accuracy standards.

All of this means, for the customer, a new way of looking at things. The sad fact is that fine timber stocks and traditional fabrication methods are gone forever. Along with this disappears the opportunity to tune a modern rifle with simple hand tools, this at exactly the same time as generally goes your opportunity to have easy access to a range to test your modifications before competition. All this is the down side to living in our modern world.

This by no means creates a bleak future for the experimenter or the specialist user. More time may be devoted to setting up the rifle for the specific requirement. More time may be devoted to ammunition nature, load development, shooting technique, and practice. All this applies to the military marksman as well as the civilian user.

Conclusion -

We do our level best to avoid the (hate to say it again) Cosy Scenario. Our job is to provide an excellent product of practical and modern standard. That is where we began and that is how we shall continue.

That is exactly why we put so much effort into working ahead of time with our future projects, take the time to research their relevance within the framework of practicality and operability then bone this out into hardware that scores the bullseye first time, every time.
