My Two Cents
"The Next Room" was released in August 1994, and Mordred split soon after. In an interview late in 1994, Gannon Hall claimed that the split was due to "musical differences" (that old chestnut), and that he personally didn't intend to make heavy music any more. The album featured new singer Paul Kimball, who had replaced Scott Holderby early in 1994. The lyrics on The Next Room were written by Kimball (Pause wrote the majority of the lyrics for "Shut"), while the entire band contributed to the music.

What's it like? Well...different. But good different. It took me about a month to get into, but there are some good songs here. Paul Kimball's lyrics are creative and interesting, and his singing, while not as appealing as Scott's, is in a strong, more conventional style. The music is too slow at times, a bit "grungy" in spots and sometimes verges on hardcore, especially on "Lo-Cal, Hi-Fiber".

The five greatest things about this album are:

  • 'Shut' - Pause's rap is great and Paul compliments him well.
  • Paul's lyrics to 'Skid' - the last "Pass the gun around" line is great!
  • The extended guitar solo on 'Rubber Crutch'.
  • 'In a turn' - a really good mood piece, provided it catches you in the right mood. Not sure about that weird sample at the end, though!
  • The hardcore groove of 'Lo-Cal, Hi-Fiber' - Mr Henry Rollins would be impressed!
