My Two Cents

Whilst I think the band peaked with their next CD, there's no doubt that Mordred were already on fire when they made 'Fool's Game'. In terms of consistency, 'Fool's' is possibly the band's best CD - there are no real bum tracks and it stays focussed right to the end. Sound-wise, this CD definitely belongs to the old-school, 'scooped'-sounding thrash albums, yet the band attains a rare level of songwriting variety within this seemingly narrow genre. Compare 'The Artist'(uplifting & full of flair) with 'Shatter'(grindy, dark) and you'll get what I mean.

The five greatest things about this album are:

  • 'State of Mind' - tasty riffs, cool lyrics, the perfect first track.
  • 'The Artist' - one of the most original thrash songs ever.
  • The solo on 'Numb'. It just really gets to me.
  • Gannon's drumming - like any good metal drummer, he's always busy on 'Fool's'.
  • The lyrics to 'Reckless Abandon'.
