Newspaper
clippings are a useful source of information for people researching
their family history.
For
this reason, the Launceston Branch of the Tasmanian Family History Society is indexing newspaper births, deaths and marriages.
One of the more useful sources of family information is the daily
newspaper. The practice of announcing family events - births,
engagements, marriages, deaths, burials - goes back a long way,
to at least the early days of the colony.
And if you're fortunate, you may find an article describing a
wedding, who attended and their relationships, or an obituary
giving details of the deceased's life history you might not otherwise
know.
Sometimes these notices and stories also mention other family
members not directly related to the event. For example:"The
bride was attended by her sisters Mary and Martha." Even
births may contain unexpected items.
But how do you find these notices? If you know the date and place
of the event, it is quite easy.
But usually this is what you are trying to find out. For this
reason, many genealogical societies are indexing newspaper births,
deaths and marriages.
The Launceston branch of the Tasmanian Family History Society
Inc. has produced indexes to the Examiner covering all events
from 1900 to 1950.
Births are indexed through to 1960, and the deaths index for 1951-1960
is also available.
Other indexes up to 1960 are currently under production. These
indexes are available for purchase
from the Society, or can be consulted in libraries throughout
the Country
Indexes for other Tasmanian daily newspapers have also been produced
in part by members of the other
branches of the Society and can be purchased from them.
