Is Genealogy?
 Genealogy - The Roots. by Jenny Gill - Launceston Branch Member. Genealogy is a record of the descent of a person or family from an ancestor; the pedigree of that person or family, Genealogy is the science of investigating family pedigrees and tracing the descent. From this record comes the Genealogical, or Family Tree. This tree sets down the pedigree as a chart in the form of a tree with branches reaching across many generations. Having established the pedigree the next step is to 'flesh out' the names and dates by adding information on topics such as education, occupation, immigration, and the places where our ancestors lived, prayed and socialised. The general history of the times in which our ancestors lived, influenced society and created such enormous population shifts like Transportation of Convicts and the Assisted Immigration schemes of the 19th century.

Genealogy unites people and families and creates a sense of belonging, especially in times when family bonds seem not quite as tight as a hundred years ago.
