| Constipation is the word for difficult
and infrequent passing of dry, hard faeces is considered constipation.
This is usually a harmless condition but can signify an underlying disorder,
especially if you are over 40 years old. Any noticeable change in personal
habits should be reported to a doctor for investigation. |

Causes of Constipation:
• Highly refined
and insufficient fibber in the diet.
• In the elderly, immobility and weakness of the abdominal muscles may
be the problem.
• Hemorrhoids and anal fissure may inhibit bowel movements.
• Diverticular disease or cancer may cause a narrowing of part of the colon,
leading to constipation.
• Iron tablets and some drugs can cause constipation.
• Many women can be affected with hormonal changes during pregnancy and
the 2nd phase of menstrual cycle.
• Inadequate physical exercise.
• Lack of relaxation time.
• Medications
• Metabolic imbalances (diabetes, , kidney disease)
• Magnesium , potassium deficiency
• Endocrine abnormalities (low thyroid function, hyperthyroidism (elevated
calcium levels), pituitary disorders)
• Bowel diseases (IBS, diverticulosis, tumor)
• Neurogenic abnormalities ( nerve disorders)

Consult
a doctor if constipation occurs with blood in the faeces, pain during
bowel movements or loss of weight.

TREATMENT FOR CONSTIPATION |

- Aloe
Vera juice is quite helpful. Take ¼ cup, two to three times
daily until stool is soft and easy to pass.
- Cascara
Sagrada - For overnight relief take an herbal formula that includes
Cascara Sagrada.
- Psyllium
husks, available in capsules or powder is an excellent stool
softener with mild laxative properties.
- Slippery
elm Has anti inflammatory and soothing effect in the
gastro intestinal tract.

| DIETARY TIPS FOR CONSTIPATION |
- Increase
the amount of fluids in your diet. Drink at least
8 glasses of pure water daily. Have herbal teas,
vegetables juices, fresh fruit juices, and soups
often.
- Stewed
prunes or prunes that have been soaked overnight
in water and take first thing in the morning.
- Oatmeal
twice a week helps to stimulate the intestine and
help to provide fiber.
- Fiber
- Increase the amount of fiber in your diet. Eat
more vegetables and fruits.
- Chew
your food completely and do not overeat.
