The surname GRIBBLE (and its variants, see our separate listing of these) is uncommon, and tends to occur in geographical 'clumps', both now and historically. It is our belief that all the GRIBBLE's, worldwide, are either related, or will be able to be traced back to a small handful of disjoint families.
This website therefore provides us with an opportunity to both give and
receive information about GRIBBLE's and their descendants (whether they carry
the surname GRIBBLE or not - that is both male and female).
Our objective is to serve as a focal point for genealogists interested in
the surname of GRIBBLE, be it their primary interest or not.
We have started this One Name Study and its associated website to complement our work, begun about 25 years ago, in tracking down GRIBBLE's worldwide. The various pages of this site will, hopefully, provide readers with some useful information and encourage them to share their discoveries with us.
We do not fancy 'reinventing the wheel' any more than necessary, and doubt
anyone else wants to either. Consequently, we believe that while we have a lot
of data, there will be many others who can also contribute to our collective
'GRIBBLE hunting'.
We wish to establish a 'clearing house ' for information related to GRIBBLE's and their descendants.
We do not know precisely, but have followed a two step process to make an estimate.
We have estimated this based on numbers of residential entries in White Page Telephone Books. The process is described in more detail on the GRIBBLE's Now Page. In summary, we estimate there are about 11,000 - 12,000 people currently alive we are hoping to link to the worldwide GRIBBLE family, made up of:
5,500 - 6,000 people currently alive with the surname GRIBBLE,
+
5,500 - 6,000 people who either are or have mothers who were born GRIBBLE.
We have made an initial rough estimate of the number of people, now deceased, who we hope to link to the worldwide GRIBBLE family. This number includes those who were born or married GRIBBLE's and also the spouses and immediate children of women born GRIBBLE. This is in keeping with our approach of being an equi-opportunity genetic site!
This gives a total of 20,000 - 25,000 people.
We note that we could expend the search a little further, and seek to include all descendants of all GRIBBLE's, that is we seek to include all descendants on both the male and female sides of the family. In this case, our estimate of the number of people we are seeking will nearly double, for both those currently living and deceased.
Adding up the two components, Alive and Past GRIBBLE's gives us an estimate that there are approximately
35,000 both alive and deceased
people who are members of the worldwide GRIBBLE family. This number may reach toward 60,000 - 70,000 if all descendants of all those born GRIBBLE are sought.
Given the size of the populations of the major western countries, where the GRIBBLEs are concentrated, it is clear we are a rather rare breed … As our spouses have been heard to observe:
'Further comment is entirely superfluous!'
Despite this evidence of (relative) rarity, there are still a good few of us to find and link!
