This page contains some interesting references to current GRIBBLE's and some of their activities.

GRIBBLE Demographics

We have calculated the number of GRIBBLE's in Australia using Australian demographic data, based on the 1996 census and data from the telephone system. We have made a number of assumptions, both about the demographics in general, and that these assumptions can be applied to GRIBBLE's.

This provides the estimate that there are about 900 people currently alive in Australia with the surname of GRIBBLE. We have then applied the same set of assumptions and approach to other countries. The results are:

These are approximate results, and do not cover all countries, but do cover all the countries in which we are aware of there being GRIBBLE's. Also, the distributions per 100,000 of population are not uniform within countries, as there are GRIBBLE 'hotspots' in each country (see later). So we estimate there are:

5500 - 6000 people with the GRIBBLE surname currently living (worldwide)

As there are countries we have omitted, it is perhaps more likely that this is an underestimate than an overestimate. Also, based on work others have done and we are utilising, we estimate that this implies that there:

22,500 - 25,000 people with the GRIBBLE surname who have lived since the year 1500 (worldwide)

Since this is an "equi-opportunity gene site" we double the above number to get an approximation of the number of people currently alive to whom we are seeking links. This is based on counting those who either have a GRIBBLE as a father (so carry the surname), or have a GRIBBLE as a mother (so do not carry the GRIBBLE surname, but carry their mothers GRIBBLE genes), and then presuming there are equal numbers of fathers and mothers (probably a fair bet …).

So, we have an estimated grand total that there are about:

12,000 currently living (worldwide)

50,000 who have lived since 1500 (worldwide)

we are hoping to link into the Worldwide GRIBBLE 'Family'.

GRIBBLE 'Hot Spots'

As we noted above, the distribution of GRIBBLE's within countries is uneven, there are relative 'hots spots' in each country. We list some of these 'hot spots' below (in terms of absolute number of GRIBBLE's - as opposed to incidence per 100,000);

Grybbel Parke - Dartmoor, Devon, England (1386)
Gribbell Island - British Columbia, Canada. It is in the Douglas Channel, on the way to Kitimac, in northern BC
Gribble Road - Victor Harbour, South Australia.
Gribble Prairie, Gribble Gap - Jackson Co, NC, USA. Named for William Black GRIBBLE and his son John respectively
