If you would like to cross-country ski, you have basically three pre-pisted areas to choose from. These would be the Blumental (above Mürren), the Lauterbrunnen Valley and in Grindelwald Grund. As I've been pushing the Mürren area, let me first say that the Blumental course is the smallest at one kilometer, but it offers the most spectacular scenery. Rent Langlauf skis at Abegglen Sport for SFr 18.00, take the Allemendhubel funicular one way (SFr 6.80) and walk or ski down to where the clearly visible course begins. Fortunately, the roughly circular course spans the distance between the pensions Suppenalp and Sonnenberg, making up for what it lacks in size by availability of refreshment. Cross-country skiing along the river in the Lauterbrunnen Valley is my least-recommended option, practical only if you happen to be staying in Lauterbrunnen, and there's enough snow at that altitude. Rent skis at Crystal Sport, as it is the only sport shop in Lauterbrunnen. Probably the best place to go cross-country skiing is in Grund, which is just down the hill from Grindelwald. Grund has a beginner, an intermediate and an advanced course, all criss-crossing the romantic riverside woods at the base of the Eiger north face. You could, for example, combine a half-day of cross-country skiing with a half day of sledding or hiking. If you are staying at Balmer's, the Ski Service Grindelwald (in Grund Station) will rent you cross-country skis at a discount. Frank disclaimer - all prices were correct in 1995, but have yet to be updated for this on line edition. |
