Hike Duration Classification Cost
Grindelwald Upper Glacier 2 1/2 hours easy SFr 16.80 (from Interlaken)

Take the train from Interlaken East to Grindelwald, then walk straight out the main road. The road will take you directly to the glacier in about an hour's time. Unless conditions are positively springlike, ignore any signs you may see for walking paths (or you will most likely find yourself floudering in undetectable gullies full of neck-high snow.) Other than offering some changing perspective on Grindelwald and the mountains, the roadway is not wildly interesting. Arrival at the glacier makes it more worthwhile, especially with the natural artistry of the snow and ice in its immediate vicinity. The Hotel Wetterhorn fronts right onto the glacier, in case anybody wants a hot drink.

Start back the same way you came, but, for variation, take clearly-marked Terassenweg, which veers off to the right about half-way. Terassenweg runs parallel to the main road, only higher up on the hillside, with many obvious connecting trails in between. Continue on, past dream cottages, deep pine forests and views out over Grindelwald (not to mention the dramatic Eiger north face), until you meet another road coming in from the left. Turn there, and in about fifteen minutes you'll be back at the Grindelwald train station.
