"I have known Denis Callinan for a period of 31 years. Apart from being classmates at Miami High in the early 70's, Denis and I have enjoyed a close friendship through the sport of surfing and been in constant contact for 3 decades. We have created, organised and completed many, many projects in those years, and our combined efforts have raised upwards of $400,000 for various charities.
In 1985 Denis and I, along with another friend and surf coach Peter Bryant, established the Wayne Rabbit Bartholomew Academy of Surfing, the first of its kind in Australia. With our combined credentials the Academy was issued a special license to operate on any and all Gold Coast beaches. We also participated in, and completed, Surfing Australia's very first Level 1 Coaching Accreditation Course.
When I was appointed National Coaching Director in 1992 the Academy was wound up, however throughout my tenure with Surfing Australia I kept Denis abreast of all important developments in the area of coaching and Denis duly extended his accreditations at the appropriate time.
With decades of experience, Denis Callinan is today one of the most knowledgable surf coaches in the field. He keeps abreast of improvements in coaching technique and strives to maintain the highest levels of qualification in relation to surf saftey.
One of Denis' strong points is his rapport with his students. Denis invariably goes beyond the prescribed time allocation to ensure customer satisfaction.
Denis loves working in an ocean environment. After years of travel to Hawaii's North Shore he has developed a deep respect for the sea and all who play in it." -
