2003 News & Reports
Please feel free to pass on news items to:
27/4/2002 - Season opener against NewTown Eagle results in a 3-0 defeat. A
healthy percentage of possession and a missed penalty didn't produce the
results we needed, and we were punished for a couple of lapses of
concentration at the back.
3/5/2003 Wasn't
there - no report, but a win. 2-1 against Cannons.
11/5/2003 The
Barnstoneworth machine is warming up, knocking in a casual 7 goals against
Hobart Zebras. Cause for a little concern is the defensive record, letting 4
goals in in this game. Ryan and McMullen with braces, and Hunt a bag full of
misses.
18/5/2003 Wasn't
there - no report. 0-0 away to Beachside. Probably not much to report anyway.
24/5/2003 - Barnstoneworth easily account for a very
undermanned Knights unit 7-0. Undermanned to the tune of only providing 8
players for the contest. Barney did what was required, without setting the
game alight. Ryan and McMullen again with braces, and Hunt finally nails one
(although only a penalty).
1/6/2003
Wasn't there - no report. 1-0 loss to Uni Bombers.
8/6/2003
Wasn't there - no report. 3-0 loss to South Hobart.
15/6/2003 A stirring victory for the Barney's, coming
from behind to triumph 3-2 over NewTown Eagle. Panic defence was the order of
the day in the last few minutes, but we held them out to avenge the first round
defeat.
21/6/2003 3-0 victory away to
Cannons, a good result in what was a closely contested match. The finishing of
Dalton proved the difference. A soft yellow card to Hunt - tut tut.
29/6/2003
Match postponed
6/7/2003 Barnstoneworth
salvages a 1-1 draw against Beachside, with a terrific Ryan equaliser in the
90th minute. Barnstoneworth created the better chances, and probably
deserved to win the game, but still trailing after 89 minutes we were happy to
get a point. Donaldson picks up a yellow.
12/7/2003 Another
draw, 2-2 with Knights. After leading early 2-0, top-of-the-table Knights
clawed back into the game to be level early in the second half.
Barnstoneworth withstood heavy pressure to secure a point.
20/7/2003 A third draw in a row, against highly
credentialed University 1-1. An entertaining match, with both teams having
opportunities to seal victory.
27/7/2003 A disappointing performance from the Barneys this
week, succumbing 2-1 to second bottom side South Hobart. General play possession
time was high, but final passes to strikers and finishing skills let us down.
Even against 10 men toward the end, we couldn't break through, but this
highlights the evenness of the competition.
3/7/2003
After leading 1-0 at half time, Barnstoneworth succumbed to a 2-1 loss at the
hands of NewTown Eagle. An open game was witnessed, however our possession time
was not transferred to shots on goal. After being winless in our last 5 outings,
media pressure is starting to mount on manager Terry Vulnerables.
10/7/2003 With manager Terry Vulnerables on
his sick bed, Barney rallied for a victory. Not sure if it was a stirring
victory for our manager, or the fact that he wasn't in charge that got us over
the line. In truth, the 3-0 win against an undermanned Kingston Cannons could
have and should have been greater, with Donaldson netting twice and one own goal
(sorry Michael).
16/8/2003 Terry Vulnerables was back
at the helm this week, steering Barnstoneworth to a 3-1 defeat to Hobart Zebras,
who appeared to have a ring-in or two in their side. This still didn't explain
the disappointing showing by Barney on the day - something for the manager to
ponder.
31/8/2003
Wasn't there - no report. 4-2 loss to Glenorchy Knights.
6/9/2003 Another draw, 1-1 with probable premier Uni
Bombers. Barney played well all day, even with a few regulars out,
creative in offence and accountable in defence. Deservedly took the lead just
after halftime, only to let through an equaliser in the 88th minute after a goal
mouth scramble. Thanks to Ian for stand-in goalkeeper duties with no gloves.
14/9/2003 A 2-2 Draw with South Hobart, Barney fighting
back after going 2-0 down. Played at Wellesley Park, which the referee was
willing to deem unplayable and call the game off, but as both teams were
stripped and ready we played on through the mud swamps.
20/9/2003 A catch up game against Beachside, an
entertaining 3-3 draw, with the team totally playing out of position. Bos the
surprise packet, proving a handful up front.
