2002 - Latest news from BUFC:

24/02/2002 - Preseason training starts in a frenzy.  Well... a leisurely 30 min kick followed by beer and BBQ. (You have to start somewhere! )
14/4/2002 - A 4-2 victory away to Kingston Cannons, a good start to our campaign in a higher division. The football wasn't always the prettiest, and the fitness can only improve, but a win is a win.
21/4/2002 - A 3-1 loss away to Zebras, on the big Bell St pitch. We came up against a class side with many ex-higher league players, but we acquitted ourselves well, especially our back 4 with a couple of their goals on the lucky side.
27/4/2002 - Our first home game...but one to forget. A reasonable first half against the breeze saw BUFC go in 2-1 down at the break, feeling very much in the game.  But we let ourselves down in the second half with poor marking and poor disposal, to finally loose 6-2. Simply a game that didn't want to run our way. A penalty to Marshall and a goal to Hunt (plus a missed penalty) were the scorers.

5/5/2002 - A 2-2 draw with Hobart Olympic at Queenswalk. 2 Goals to Hunt, clearly the clubs leading scorer. A pretty evenly fought match, in windy conditions. A rare event this round with all 4 matches being drawn. Barnstoneworth's first draw since 1999.

11/5/2002 - A disappointing 4-1 loss to Knights, after feeling like we were in the game for most of the match. Still lacking some fitness on our opposition, this is improving. Defensive lapses of concentration has hurt us badly this year.   McGuire the scorer.

18/5/2002 - Hmmm...it's not getting any better. 5-0 thumping by University. Again we were better than the score line suggests, but errors are costing us dearly. Finished the game with about 7 fit players.

26/5/2002 - An entertaining 4-4 draw away to New Town Eagle, featuring a tremendous left foot strike from Hansen. A game that Barney should have won, but let slip.

1/6/2002 - Another win ! 5-2 defeat of Kingston Canons. No match report - I wasn't there.

16/6/2002 - A disgrace of a pitch, totally water-logged with a deep mud patch/quicksand in the centre, playing in the rain and cold ... and we lost 4-1 to Hobart Zebras. After going down 3-0 after 20 mins, we held pretty well. No disgrace, we played a good side featuring many ex-State League players. The Great Kalis slotting a penalty.

22/6/2002 - Unfortunately another loss. 3-1 to Hobart Wanderers. A pretty even game, the opposition simply used the ball better than Barney, and the breaks didn't go our way. 2-0 down at half time, we scored early in the second period through a terrific long range shot from Kenna. A third goal as we pushed on was always possible, and resulted. Stand-in keepers and a missed penalty didn't help our cause.

30/6/2002 - A 2-1 loss to Hobart Olympic. No match report - I wasn't there.

7/7/2002 - A goal feast as Barney put away 5 in our 5-2 victory over Glenorchy Knights who were 3rd on the ladder. Finally things went our way for a change in a game where we led 2-1 at half time with only 10 players. (Another player appeared for the second half, so we had 10 and a substitute!)  Boyd slotted 2 terrific first half goals, his first for the club. Kenna clinically netted twice in the second period, to join Boyd as the 2 outstanding players on the day. A penalty to Hunt completes the scorers.

13/7/2002 - Well we gave the 2nd on the ladder Uni Bombers a real scare, being 0-0 until 10 minutes from the end when a cross ended up in the net for a lucky goal. A second goal was conceded in the last seconds as Barney pushed in search of an equaliser. Not a pretty game, but heads held high for a gutsy performance from the reds.

21/7/2002 - A 3-0 loss to Newtown Eagles, who simply played smarter football than we did. Even with 10 men, they seemed to find free players much easier than we could. Not a display for the scrapbook from Barney.

27/7/2002 - A 2-2 draw to bottom side Kingston Cannons, after being 2-0 down early. Neither side reaching great heights in this match, a few chances each to clinch a win went begging.

3/8/2002 - A 3-0 loss to the top side in Hobart Zebras. 0-0 at half time, and we were taking the game to them, but couldn't sustain our performance throughout. A good effort from our lads, especially as we started with 9 with a couple of late ring-ins making up the 11. A carton of Red to be supplied from Blakey next week, the referee getting the better of him to reduce us to 10 men with about 20 mins to go.

10/8/2002 - A good performance from the Barnstoneworth unit running out 3-0 winners over Hobart Wanderers. We actually got our stuff together to be clearly the better side over a much higher placed team. A joy to sing the song again.

17/8/2002 - A disappointing showing this week away to Olympic going down 2-0. We never got into our smooth precision passing game, tended to rush our attacks and basically didn't seem like we were switched on this week. Maybe next week.

24/8/2002 - If we'd been offered a draw with the 3rd placed team before the match we probably would have taken it. But after leading 1-0 against Glenorchy Knights down to 10 men, a 1-1 draw seemed like one that got away.

31/8/2002 - After holding the second placed team University Bombers to 1-0 at half-time, we let them get away to down us 4-0 at full-time. Looking forward to the season's end, only one match to go.

7/9/2002 - Season's over!  After pulling our positions out of a hat for our last game, we surprised some by drawing 1-1 with New Town Eagle, after leading early following a tremendous strike from Hansen from 25 yards (some thought it was only 5 yards).  A big night followed, with some rumoured to have finished at 5:30 am (closer to 6am after I managed to walk home).
