2001 - Lastest news from BUFC:
13/8/2001 - Sent in from an
Anonymous reader:

A source close to
the players has heard that discussions prior to the game revealed that the
majority of players were coming out of contract at the end of the 2001 season
and that the big Greek was not going to delve into the coffers for renewals.
May help to explain the rather poor performance on the weekend. (how many
holidays has he been on this year - there could be a motion to have
Williams/Wilson come in and take over the books).
The six pack and pie transfer fee was not going to be offered on the
negotiation table for renewals - could be the reason Peters decided to sit out
along with McGuire, Hansen, Salter, Buck and Deveraux.
Could this be the start of a break away club or were there too many amber
fluids consumed by the source - more to follow in the coming weeks as the
story unfolds.
UPDATE: Official
response from club management:
"Player contracts will be discussed in full during
the forthcoming end-of-season players trip,
code-named "IAN".
2001 - Match Reports:
March 2001 - Preseason training during March, a hectic pace set by
the lads. Hope we don't burn ourselves out too early, only time will tell.
21/4/2001 - Start the season at Queenswalk against Uni Rovers with a
record quickest goal after 18 sec (est). The Dog Boulter netting 2. A solid
opener for a supremely fit and well oiled machine.
25/4/2001 - Statewide Vase Rnd1, on ANZAC Day, and it was the
fighting digger qualities that held of New Norfolk for a nailbiting win.
Leading 3-0 at half-time, we were completely overrun in the 2nd period by a
fitter, faster side, but somehow hung on for a 3-2 win ( with considerable
help from the woodwork ).
28/4/2001 - A very uninspiring 2-0 win against Uni Grads, with 2 goals from Blake. Not a game to put in the archives, but a win is a win. Subs
bench a shambles.
6/5/2001 - Used our "Get of of Jail Free" card today, after
trailing 1-3 with 20 mins remaining, we win 4-3. Two goals from Donaldson (4
in two games, 3 with his head) 1 from Devereux (finally) and a blinder
from Hansen.
12/5/2001 - Bye
20/5/2001 - Statewide Vase Rnd2. Well, what a pasting. Christian Utd
were too big, too fast, too fit......too good. A 10-0 flogging, but to put it
in perspective, they are 3 divisions above us, and the lads fought out the
game to the end. What was Tim Peters thinking, letting in 10 ?
27/5/2001 - A potentially very important 2-0 win over DOSA, who were
previously unbeaten and leading the league. After going 2 goals up in the
first half, Barnstoneworth appeared to be happy to sit on the lead, and play
out time.
2/6/2001 - A 3-0 victory over New Norfolk, again just doing what was
required and nothing more. Hope the killer instinct returns. Miles scores 2 to
open his account for the club.
10/6/2001 - A hard fought 2-1 win over Uni Rovers - a completely different
outfit to the Rovers we played earlier in the year. Goals by Hansen and
McGuire proved just enough.
17/6/2001 - A good performance with a 3-0 win over the well-performed
Metro outfit. The defence again miserly, with the 5th clean sheet in 7 games.
Goals from Devereux, McGuire and Johnston. We've now opened a 3 point
lead at the top of the table. Onward with the juggernaut !
23/6/2001 - The Barnstoneworth Machine has finally shifted into top gear,
with a thumping of a hapless Uni Bohemians 12-0. Couldn't help but score with
world-class crosses coming in all day. Big George missed a late penalty that
would have secured him a glorious hat-trick.
30/6/2001 - The machine rolls on with a 5-1 win over Uni Grads, with some
sparkling soccer being played in patches. Eased off late and let in only the
fifth league goal this season in 9 games. 2 goals each to Donaldson and
McGuire, 1 to Ryan.
7/7/2001 - Postponed due to bad weather ( Hobart Wanderers )
15/7/2001 - A comfortable 6-0 win over New Norfolk, on a soft Tynwald
Park. Single goals to Donaldson, Johnston and Hunt, and a stunning and
memorable hat-trick from Hansen, simply awesome from this proven goal-scorer.
Other results mean the Barney machine is now at least 2 games plus goal
difference clear of the chasing pack at the top of the league table.
21/7/2001 - An important 1-0 win over a spirited Metro outfit on a very
soggy pitch at the 2nd home of soccer, to fight off possibly the last real
threat to the League. Ryan with the winner.
28/7/2001 - Hobart Wanderers should have scored against us several times
... but they didn't. So Barnstoneworth marched on to a 3-0 win in
difficult conditions, being windy and a small bumpy DOSA ground. Donaldson,
Hunt and the great Kalis on target. Good to see both silos on the score sheet.
12/8/2001 - A rather insipid performance against the bottom of the ladder
Uni Bohemians, but still a 3-0 win. Not quite the 12-0 of last round. Scorers
of Gillam, Daly and Wise (finally). 10th clean sheet in 13 league matches.
Only need 1 point from remaining 3 games to secure title. Bring it on !
19/8/2001 - We've done it ! 2001 League Champions. A victory over
Hobart Wanderers 4-2 has clinched the coveted trophy once more. Soggy
conditions, and going behind early didn't deter the intrepid warriors of BUFC.
Ryan, Wise, McGuire and Buck with a well taken penalty were scorers. Peters
letting in 2 at our end, including a beautifully taken chance from Daly at the
death.
25/8/2001 - Unfortunately no play, as Christian Utd had to forfeit. Ah
well, 3-0 to to us.
1/9/2001 - Well...A loss. After leading 2-0 at half
time against DOSA, we lapsed to finally lose 3-2. An own goal from Jimmy
Morris, as well as a penalty given away by the same made for a forgettable
game for Jim. With nothing to play for maybe our minds weren't quite on the
job.
----------------------------------------------
22/9/2001 - Knock-out Cup Semi. After
progressing straight to the semi from a forfeit, we dispatched a strong Hobart
Wanderers side 4-1. Goals to Daly, Hunt (2), and Salter (pen). A good
performance on a hot day on a big pitch after a long lay off - every excuse we
needed if we'd lost...but we fight on to the final.
13/10/2001 - Knock-out Cup Final. Bummer. Lost 2-0
to old rival DOSA. Didn't make use of the strong wind in the first half to be
0-0 at the break, then a freakish volley put us behind, and a second was added
as we pushed forward. Ah well...a second piece of silverware would've been
nice, not to be.
