Dorish Maru College

Dorish Maru College is our home in
Melbourne, Australia.
We have chosen this name to establish a memorial to the missionaries who lost their lives on this ship of the coast Papua New Guinea in 1944.

While the Japanese ship was named "Yorishime Maru", the missionaries at the time came to know it by the name "Dorish Maru". On Sunday, 6 February 1944, American planes strafed the Japanese freighter "Dorish Maru" off Wewak, killing seven Divine Word Missionary Priests, twelve Divine Word Missionary Brothers, twenty-seven Holy Spirit Missionary Sisters and a number of lay-missionary
co-workers. Bishop Wolf and others died later of their wounds.

The community of Dorish Maru College spent the days of the School Year primarily in academic growth and advancement. Seminarians fulfil their academic requirements  in the philosophical, theological and pastoral courses at the Yarra Theological Union.  Those who meet the requirement will in the course of their studies earn a Bachelor of Theology from the Melbourne College of Divinity.

Most days begin with community morning prayer and Eucharist. The heart of our shared life is the Eucharist. Our oneness in Christ grows particularly through its celebration where we are strengthened by listening to the word of God and where the one bread we break is a communion with the Body of Christ. While gathered around the table of the Lord we are united in spirit with all our confreres and with those we serve.

During the month of November the names of your
dear departed family and friends can be remembered in the Masses and prayers  of Divine Word Missionaries
around the world.
